Arsenal receive January transfer boost in pursuit of $52M center-back

The Gunners could complete a deal for their defensive target this January should a few conditions be met.

Arsenal are starting to be linked with several names now that they have a new coach in the form of Mikel Arteta. It is no secret that the club are in need of quality defenders and the Gunners have reportedly received a huge boost in their pursuit of exactly that.

The north London giants are eyeing a move for Dayot Upamecano, the highly-rated RB Leipzig center-back, and have reportedly received a boost. According to Le Parisiens, his Bundesliga employers would be willing to let him go as early as January should they land a replacement.

Leipzig are eyeing PSG’s 17-year-old defender Tanguy Kouassi, with several outlets claiming the German top-flight leaders have already signed the teenager. He is seen as the successor to Upamecano and Kouassi’s arrival would clear the path for the Frenchman’s exit.

Arsenal attempted to sign Upamecano over the summer but saw their $72M offer rejected. However, with the defender’s contract set to end at the end of next season, the Premier League giants are confident of agreeing a $52M deal for his services.

With Saliba set to arrive from St. Etienne next summer, the two Frenchman could make up the Gunners’ center-back partnership for seasons to come. A deal for Upamecano must be done first, with Arteta reportedly being adamant about strengthening the defense. Their next game in the league is against Chelsea, which means the newly-appointed Spaniard can also make do with what he has got currently.
