The 2019 Copa America is right around the corner. Fans of the beautiful game eagerly await the kick-off of this highly-anticipated tournament, with Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, and Chile set to battle it out in Group C.
Only two teams are guaranted progression, with only the top two third-ranked sides moving on to the next round. The Samurai Blue is the guest of this edition but could be facing an early exit due to the stiff competition.
La Roja is the reigning champion and will likely battle it out with Uruguay for the top spot, while Ecuador is the dark horse of these lots. Here's a closer look at the teams set to battle it out in Group C.
Uruguay
Uruguay is one of the favorites for this tournament. With the likes of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez leading the attacker, La Celeste should be capable of breaking down even the toughest of defense and with Godin and Gimenez at the heart of their back-four, scoring past Oscar Tabarez's men won't be easy. It was back in 2011 when they were last crowned the champions of South America and they will be eager to end their wait.
Ecuador
Ecuador is not a safe bet for the 2019 Copa America but the fact that there is a knockout stage berth for third-placed teams will give them hope. Should La Tricolor finish ahead of Japan, and by a healthy gap, they could secure progression. Their recent form suggests otherwise, however, having won only twice in their last seven games.
Japan
Japan is a guest of this year's CONMEBOL competition, but don't bet on the Asian giant ging far. With the 2020 Olympics game being right around the corner, the manager has opted for a youthful and inexperienced squad. Of the 23 men chosen for Brazil, 17 are uncapped.
Chile
After failing to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Chile was rocked by embarrassment. Regardless, La Roja is back-to-back Copa America champions -- if you include Copa América Centenario. Sadly, the golden generation that conquered the continent is no longer in their prime.
