As things are, both Finland and Kosovo have already been eliminated. Croatia, so far, are the team set to book their ticket to next year's World Cup, as they sit ahead of Iceland on goal difference; however, as the table above shows, Turkey definitely are still in contention for a runners-up, or even first place. That is, provided they can defeat Ukraine on Saturday.
However, Turkey have struggled in recent times. They were farm from their best at their last tournament, which saw them exit the EURO 2016 competition at the group stages after losing to Croatia and Spain. Despite defeating the Czech Republic in their final match, it was too little, too late. Barcelona's Arda Turan, who was serving as the team's skipper, received most of the blame and reportedly even attacked a journalist on the team's plane before abruptly deciding to retire from international football.
Turan has struggled to nail down a spot in Barcelona's starting XI, but nonetheless has been welcomed back into the fold with the arrival of new manager Mircea Lucescu - albeit not as the team's captain. A major concern for the visitors is their overall bad away record. Whilst they are five games sans defeat, they have taken on teams like Kosovo (twice), Finland and ended up drawing with Macedonia. A 1-1 draw with Croatia in Zagreb was certainly promising, but then they ended up losing 2-0 to Iceland, so it remains to be seen if they can replicate the same kind of performance that saw them earn all three points against Kosovo in their last World Cup qualifier earlier this year.
As for Ukraine, they were very poor at the EURO 2016 tournament and will be keen on pretty much the same thing as Turkey - to pick up maximum points to give themselves a shot at trying to catch Iceland and possibly a play-off spot for a ticket to Russia next year.
