Forbes recently released their list of the world’s highest earning sportsmen and women, and with no surprise, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi found themselves at the top.
The Spanish Primera Division superstars are the beautiful game’s highest earners, but it was the Real Madrid superstar who earned first spot. Ronaldo beat his Argentine rival having won the Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA Men’s Player award. However, salaries, prize money and bonuses paid from June 2015 to June 2016 were only considered.
The 31-year-old earned a whopping $88m, enough money to help him forget about the Real Madrid boo-boys. He beat the Barca legend by $6.6m.
Messi came in second with an earning of $81.4m. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is enjoying a more prolific season than his Portuguese counterpart, but his team are struggling to defend their league title.
With LeBron James, Roger Federer, and Kevin Durant coming in at third, fourth, and fifth respectively; no other football player featured in the top 10. In fact, the next footballer to make the list came in at 21.
That man was Brazilian ace Neymar. Having recently put pen to par on a new deal with the Blaugrana, he earned $37.5m. Man United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic came in at 23 with $37.4m.
Other football players to feature in the top 100 were Gareth Bale ($35.9m) in 25, Sergio Aguero ($24.3m) in 60, Bastian Schweinsteiger ($22.4m) in 81, Angel di Maria and James Rodriguez (both $22.1m) in 83, and Eden Hazard ($22m) in 85.
