Real Madrid hitman Cristiano Ronaldo came to the rescue of the Spanish giants against his former club Sporting CP in their UEFA Champions League Group F fixture on Wednesday. The Portugal captain fired home a well-taken free-kick in the 88th minute to level the scores for Los Blancos, who were trailing thanks to Bruna Cesar’s opener for the visitors in the 48th minute.
And as he casually walked off the pitch in the final whistle following Alvaro Morata’s screaming header that put the hosts 2-1 up in the final second of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo made history – yet again. Despite refusing to celebrate his goal against the Premeira Liga giants, the 31-year-old went down the books of history as the player with the most free-kick goals in the history of the Champions League. Also, this was his 550th career goal as a professional footballer.
Here is how the free-kick table looks with Ronaldo at the helm.
- Cristiano Ronaldo - 12 goals
- Alessandro Del Piero – 11 goals
- Juninho – 10 goals
- Rivaldo – 8 goals
