Spanish publication AS have dropped a transfer rumor bombshell on Saturday, claiming that Manchester United have moved into pole position – ahead of Real Madrid – to sign one of the biggest name in France’s UEFA Euro 2016 squad.
And no, it is not Dimitri Payet, arguably the hosts’ player of the tournament, but rather the player everyone wants but almost no one can afford: Paul Pogba.
Last Monday, the Juventus superstar’s agent revealed that his client had begun negotiations with Los Blancos over a move, but according to AS, the 11-time Champions League winners have temporarily put talks on a hold for financial reasons.
Firstly, Real Madrid believe that the asking price for the 23-year-old is out of reach. Pogba could cost Les Merengues €120m-€140m, a fee which would make the Frenchman the new world’s most expensive footballer.
Secondly, Pogba is demanding a salary of €12m after tax, which would see him be second to only Cristiano Ronaldo as Real Madrid’s highest paid players. This may not reside well with the other players, given that the Frenchman would earn more than captain Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale is Pogba’s demands are met.
Here is where the Red Devils step in, led by newly-appointed boss Jose Mourinho and backed by a hefty transfer chest. The Portuguese tactician isn’t afraid of breaking the bank in order to rebuilt the fallen giants, as he is reportedly ready to spend big to bring back Pogba to Old Trafford.
