Former Manchester United midfield maestro Paul Scholes has criticized Ashley Young for his ''embarrassing’’ dive against CSKA Moscow in their Champions League fixture at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

With 18 minutes remaining, and Manchester United staring at yet another goalless draw, the English winger was seen stretching his legs and flying into the air after a soft tackle by defender Georgi Shchennikov in a bid to earn the home side a penalty. Although the 30-year-old was not penalized for dramatization, this is not the first time he has been caught diving.

Speaking about the incident, Scholes explained, "Ashley needs to stop doing this. He knows that himself, but it's just a habit and he can't get rid of it.

"It's so obvious and he just needs to get this out of his game. It is embarrassing and Ashley knows it."

He added: "He's a really good player and he doesn't need to resort to those tactics, but I just think it's ingrained in him."

Young has been criticized for several dives in the Premier League, most recently in 2012 when he intentionally tumbled against Aston Villa at Old Trafford hoping to secure a penalty kick for Manchester United. He was also on the spotlight against Real Sociedad after going down unnecessarily in the box. Luckily for Sociedad fans, Robin Van Persie stepped up to take the penalty but missed.

In September 14, 2013, the controversial winger was also booked by referee Jon Moss for diving after a soft challenge by Kagisho Dikgacoi of Crystal Palace. He later won a penalty for the Red Devils and Dikgacoi received the marching orders. The then Man United manager David Moyes criticized Young’s diving habits and promised to talk to him about it.

In April 8, 2012, he went down without any pressure from Shaun Derry of QPR who was sent off immediately. Wayne Rooney converted the spot kick but his teammate became the subject of debate and ridicule on social media.

In October 23, 2011 during the Manchester derby, the Red Devils were thrashed 6-1 at home by their city rivals. Man United’s consolation goal came from a penalty as a result of Young’s diving antics. He stuck his leg out to hit an advancing James Milner and ensured that there was some contact before flying into the air.

He even took his diving antics to the international level back in October 12, 2012 when he received a yellow card after dramatically diving into the box in the goalless draw with Montenegro. Although the guilty Young was quick to defend himself after the match by insisting that he was fouled, TV replays clearly showed that there was no contact between him and the Montenegro defender.
