Now that Real Madrid have beaten Manchester United to land Mesut Ozil, Sir Alex Ferguson may be even more serious in his desire to sign FC Porto and Portugal midfielder Raul Meireles.

FC Porto's Raul Meireles reacts as Manchester United's Ryan Giggs gestures.According to English magazine Sunday Mirror, the 27-year-old who has a few more years left on his FC Porto contract could join the Mancunian outfit if the Red Devils provide a high amount of money. Reports state that £15m will be enough for an agreement to be reached between the two clubs.

Over the past couple of season, Raul Meireles faced English sides against which FC Porto succumbed in the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

FC Porto lost 3-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the European competion two years ago as Raul Meireles' fellow Portuguese national team mate, Cristiano Ronaldo, emerged as the hero for scoring the winning goal of the tie.

Raul Mereiles was also included in the FC Porto squad that was surprisingly trounced by a five-star Arsenal team spiced by the wonder touches of Arshavin and Nicklas Bendtner.

If Raul Meireles indeed joins Manchester United, he will have the opportunity of appearing in the UEFA Champions League for yet another time. His current club, FC Porto, disappointedly finished third in their domestic league last season. UEFA Europa League football is all what the 2004 European winners can content themselves with.

In the first leg of the play-off, FC Porto play Genk from Belgium on Thursday, August 19. For more details about this fixture, visit the Genk vs FC Porto Live Streaming and TV Schedule page.
