Costa Rica has had an incredible run, but they now go up against a well organized Greek side. Watch live and online as both these countries aim to book their place in the next round of the tournament.

On Sunday, two countries that many did not expect much from will go head-to-head at the Itaipava Arena Pernambuco. Both made it into the knockout stage in very different ways, but now all that matters is Sunday’s match.

Greece came into the tournament knowing that defensively, they were not easy to break down. The main concerns were on the offensive side of the ball. Who would they lean on, considering Kostas Mitroglou was dealing with a nagging injury?

Theofanis Gekas proved to be unable to fill the void in the final third.

He did hit the crossbar in their opening defeat against Colombia, but the Konyaspor player was not enough of a spark to get the Greeks to find the back of the net.

With Mitroglou still in doubt after being subbed off against Japan, and sitting out the decisive match against the Ivory Coast, breaking down a solid Costa Rican defensive unit will be yet another tough task for Greece.

Georgios Samaras and Dimitris Salpingidis will have to carry some of the load for Fernando Santos’ squad going forward. But in order for them to have some reasonable chances on goal, the main piece to the puzzle for Greece resides in the midfield.

Fulham midfielder Giorgos Karagounis started against the Ivory Coast due to the suspension of Kostas Katsouranis, and his experience and vision of the game was vital. The Greek captain could be forced out of the squad with Katsouranis back from suspension, but if the European nation that shocked the world in 2004 wants to give themselves a better chance, the 37-year-old is a must have in this squad.

His passing ability will be vital to break down Los Ticos, who have only conceded one goal in three matches.

Costa Rica was placed in a group with three former World Cup champions, but that did not worry them one bit. They dispatched Uruguay with a come from behind victory, and kept Italy scoreless to claim a 1-0 victory. After topping their group to the surprise of many, Los Ticos now make their first appearance in the round of 16 for the first time since 1990.

In order to get past an organized Greek squad, they will need some more inspired performances from Joel Campbell, Keylor Navas, Christian Bolanos and captain Bryan Ruiz.

Ruiz may be one of the more underrated players at the tournament, but his ability to bring patience and confidence into Costa Rica’s offensive movements has been more than evident. He not only helps to create offense, but his header against the 2006 World Cup Champions sent his country into celebration.

Fans from both sides, as well as neutrals should be in for another tactical match on Sunday between these two countries who are not yet ready to go home.
