Major League Soccer geschiedenis, opzet, organisatie, media-aandacht
Major League Soccer (meestal aangeduid als MLS) is het hoogste niveau van professioneel mannenvoetbal in de Verenigde Staten en Canada. De competitie werd opgericht in 1993 en begon officieel drie jaar later in 1996.
De competitie is erkend door de United States Soccer Federation (USSF) en, in tegenstelling tot andere voetbalcompetities in Europa en elders, werkt het niet met een degradatie-promotiesysteem. In plaats daarvan, net als andere grote Amerikaanse sportcompetities zoals de NBA, NFL, MLB en NHL, worden teams niet gedegradeerd naar een lagere league, ongeacht hun plek op de ranglijst.
De MLS is verdeeld in twee conferenties: de Eastern Conference en de Western Conference. Teams spelen zowel tegen elkaar binnen hun eigen conferentie als tegen teams uit de andere conferentie. Het seizoen begint meestal eind februari tot begin maart en eindigt in oktober, waarbij het team met de beste reguliere seizoensprestaties de Supporters’ Shield wint.
Na het reguliere seizoen vinden de jaarlijkse MLS Cup Playoffs plaats in oktober en november, waarbij de hoogst gerangschikte teams uit beide conferenties tegen elkaar strijden. Het team dat dit na-seizoensevenement wint, verovert de MLS Cup.
In de loop der jaren is de MLS een populaire bestemming geworden voor veel spelers van over de hele wereld, vooral aan het einde van hun carrières. Recente jaren hebben gezichten als Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gareth Bale en Lionel Messi zich bij MLS gevoegd na hun carrière in Europese clubs.
In 2023 sloot Apple een baanbrekend tienjarig contract af om wereldwijd de uitzendrechten van Major League Soccer te verzorgen, met hoogwaardige live streaming en OTT-toegang voor alle wedstrijden op Apple-apparaten en geaffilieerde platforms. Deze samenwerking vergroot niet alleen Apple's sportcontentportfolio, maar biedt MLS ook een strategisch kader om het MLS-merk wereldwijd te versterken.
