Bundesliga geschiedenis, opzet, organisatie, media-aandacht

De Oostenrijkse voetbal Bundesliga is de hoogste professionele voetbalcompetitie in Oostenrijk. De competitie zoals we die nu kennen, werd opgericht in 1974, maar nationale kampioenschapvoetbal in dit land gaat terug tot 1911. In de loop der jaren is de Oostenrijkse Bundesliga uitgegroeid tot een zeer competitieve en gerespecteerde voetbalcompetitie in Centraal-Europa.

De hoogste divisie van het land heeft door de jaren heen verschillende structurele en formatwijzigingen ondergaan, maar er is een systeem van promotie en degradatie, waarbij de slechtste teams degraderen naar de Oostenrijkse voetbal Tweede Liga, ook wel bekend als 2. Liga. Ondertussen verdienen de beste teams het recht om het land te vertegenwoordigen in de clubcompetities van Europa: de UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League en UEFA Europa Conference League. Bovendien hanteert de competitie een round-robin formaat, waarbij elk team twee keer tegen elkaar speelt in het reguliere seizoen, thuis en uit.

Door de geschiedenis heen heeft de Oostenrijkse Bundesliga verschillende belangrijke mijlpalen doorgemaakt. De dominantie van Rapid Wien en Austria Wien in de beginjaren maakte plaats voor meer competitiviteit met de opkomst van andere clubs zoals Red Bull Salzburg. De competitie heeft ook investeringen gezien in infrastructuur en jeugdontwikkeling, wat heeft geleid tot een hoger speelniveau en de aantrekking van internationaal talent, met Ering Haaland en Dominik Szoboszlai als twee recente voorbeelden. Deze inspanningen hebben bijgedragen aan de voortdurende groei en bekendheid van de Oostenrijkse Bundesliga binnen het Europese voetbal.

De hoogste divisie van Oostenrijk trekt niet het publiek zoals de andere grote Europese competities, namelijk de Premier League, La Liga en Serie A. Echter, Sky heeft een grote rol gespeeld in het dichter bij een breder publiek brengen van de competitie door een totaal van $354 miljoen te investeren om van 2018-19 tot 2025-26 een rechtenovereenkomst voor acht seizoenen veilig te stellen. Ondertussen hebben FTF (For The Fans), Onefootball en de live tv-streamingdienst fuboTV de wedstrijden van de Oostenrijkse voetbal Bundesliga in de loop der jaren naar fans in de VS gebracht.
