WRAL-TV 5 history, coverage, features
WRAL-TV, also known as Channel 5, is a television station that broadcasts in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. Licensed to Raleigh, the station is an NBC affiliate owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company.WRAL-TV began broadcasting in December 1956. While originally an NBC affiliate, the station has partnered with many major networks, including ABC and CBS, the latter of which it was affiliated with for 30 years.
Although WRAL-TV is not widely known for broadcasting live sports, it has featured several sporting events over the years. This includes ACC football, basketball from Raycom Sports, and—most importantly—the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
Thanks to its affiliation with CBS, WRAL-TV became the official broadcaster of March Madness in the Research Triangle area. Additionally, the station airs a “Football Friday” show that covers high school football.
WRAL-TV is available across Central and Eastern North Carolina and enjoys out-of-market cable carriage as well.
