About Ekstraklasa
Ekstraklasa History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Polish First Division, also known as Ekstraklasa, is the top-tier football category in Poland. This league was founded in 1926 under the name I Liga, and it’s only pause came during World War II, between 1939 and 1948. In 2004, the Polish Football Federation rebranded the tournament to Ekstraklasa, adding a sponsor every number of years.
After many changes to its format, the league has settled to be played by 18 teams. Just as most European leagues, the Ekstraklasa works under a promotion-relegation system, with three teams being relegated to I Liga as they see three more being promoted. Every team plays 34 matches until the one that earns the most points is crowned champion. Additionally, teams will also earn the right to play in European competitions depending on their final ranking.
Contrary to what happens in other European leagues, the Ekstraklasa has seen many teams winning many championships. Four teams have won over ten titles, making this one of the most competitive in European football.
The Polish Ekstraklasa has been covered for many years by Telewizja Polska, but the league has also expanded to other options by streaming its content via Ekstraklasa TV, which is available on their website. Added to that, users from around the globe may be able to follow games via OneFootball.
