About
Sport 2 history, coverage, features
Sports 2, also known as Charlton 2, is the second most relevant channel for the Israeli network of sports channels that works under that name. It is owned by businessmen Eli Azour and Pini Zahavi. The channel began its broadcasts in the late 1990s as an overflow option to Sports 1, but the channel ceased to air content since they did not own a regular spot in the Israeli TV grid. After several years, Sports 2 was launched as a terrestrial channel in 2007.
Over the years, Sports 2 has been known for airing content to cover various disciplines, which have included football, basketball, tennis, handball, athletics, and wrestling, among others. The channel became one of the first in Israel to air content related to some of the lower-tier categories in English football, adding those broadcasting rights to some of the top football leagues in Europe and South America.
When it comes to football, Sports 2 has covered leagues such as the English Premier League, the English Championship, the German Bundesliga, the Italian Serie A, the Belgian First Division, the Russian Premier League, the Turkish Super Lig, the Eredivisie, or the Portuguese Liga Portugal, to name a few. Other leagues covered by this channel have included the Argentine Primera División and the Brasileirao. As the cherry on top, Sports 2 has also covered continental club tournaments such as the UEFA Europa League or the Copa Libertadores.
Sports 2 was launched as a Standard Definition channel, but a High-Definition feed was made available to its users in April 2015. Both feeds may still be available to watch in different regions of the country via numerous pay-tv carriers across the country.
