Preview: Dortmund need a miracle, Los Blancos want an early goal
Even with the expected absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Dortmund’s pitch after only 15 minutes of training on Tuesday morning, Real Madrid are virtually free from pressure. Thanks to the big win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg, Los Blancos are confident about sealing their 2013/14 UEFA Champions League semi-final spot on German soil.
This time, a repeat of the 4-1 victory they clinched over Real Madrid last season will not be enough for Borussia Dortmund to go through. The away goals rule would see them crash out from Europe on aggregate. Still, Dortmund are not giving up as football is full of surprises.
“Last year, we 'went out' in the final. This year it looks like the quarter-finals. But it is not over yet,” coach Jurgen Klopp told the press on Monday.
“Real Madrid are one of the favourites to win the Champions League but we want to defend better and use our chances better than in Madrid.
“I do believe my team showed 'cojones' in the first leg. We made mistakes in defence but we gave them a game. We are specialists for the second half and this is the second half of the quarter-final. We want to win it.”
However, an early strike by Los Blancos would all but end Dortmund’s hopes as they would need to score five goals from there. What approach will Carlo Ancelotti’s team take during the first quarter of an hour?
“We are very close to the semi-finals and that's the best motivation possible. They have 90 minutes to score four goals and we have the same time to score one,” Ancelotti said during a presser.
“The sooner we do it the quicker the tie will be over. I won't change the system.”
