After the embarrassment that was their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign, La Albiceleste looks to make amends at Brazil 2019. Here's everything you need to know.

Argentina's roster for the 2019 Copa America

The final 23-man squad for the 2019 Copa America has been chosen with some expected inclusions and surprise omissions. No eyebrows were raised when Lionel Messi was named in the roster for Brazil as he looks to end his long wait for silverware with the national side.

He is joined by other veterans and superstars such as Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria, with the promising Paulo Dybala hoping to make his mark on the international scene. Surprisingly, there was no room for Ever Banega in midfield as well as Atletico Madrid man Angel Correa.

However, the biggest name to be left out is Mauro Icardi. The deadly forward was not called up after being frozen out of Inter Milan towards the second half of the season.

Goalkeepers: Franco Armani (River Plate), Agustin Marchesin (Club America), Esteban Andrada (Boca Juniors)

Defenders: Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City), Ramiro Funes Mori (Villarreal), Marcos Acuna (Sporting Lisbon), Nicolas Tagliafico (Ajax), German Pezzella (Fiorentina), Renzo Saravia (Racing), Juan Foyth (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Angel Di Maria (PSG), Roberto Pereyra (Watford), Giovani Lo Celso (Real Betis), Leandro Paredes (PSG), Rodrigo De Paul (Udinese), Exequiel Palacios (River Plate), Guido Rodriguez (Club America)

Forwards: Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona), Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Paulo Dybala (Juventus), Lautaro Martinez (Inter), Matias Suarez (River Plate)

Who are the key players?

Lionel Messi

Does this come as a surprise? While many accuse him of disappearing when needed, he is sadly the only man who delivers in this star-studded yet disappointing nation. He had a 2018 World Cup campaign to forget, scoring a single goal en route to a round of 16 exit.

All eyes will be on the Barcelona legend as a result. Another failure to inspire his nation to silverware will only tarnish his reputation with La Albiceleste further. He will also head into this competition with the heartbreak that was the Blaugrana's embarrassing semi-final defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League. Winning the Copa America will be one way to make things up.

Sergio Aguero

Aguero has been a deadly force in the Premier League for years but in Argentina, he has never reached his full potential for the senior squad. Now that Higuain is no longer in the picture, Kun is the manager's only other proven senior goalscorer besides Messi. He won the domestic treble with Man City in 2018/19. He must now replicate that form but in an Argentina jersey.

Who is the head coach of Argentina?

Lionel Scaloni is the head coach of the two-time FIFA World Cup-winning nation, having replaced Jorge Sampaoli.

What are Argentina's chances of winning the Copa America?

Messi and Co. are one of the favorites but their recent debacle has many questioning their capability. Their horrendous 2018 World Cup campaign embarrassed the entire nation.

Regardless, there is enough talent in the squad to take them all the way. Scaloni has a five-time Ballon d'Or winner among his rank. Leo lead the country to three consecutive major finals and while all those games unfortunately ended in defeat, there is hope of the South American powerhouse going all the way.

Aside from the Olympics, the last time Argentina won a major trophy was back in 1993 and given that Messi is turning 32 this month, Leo knows this could be his last shot at silverware. This is a must-win competition for La Albiceleste.
