With the Champions League final quickly approaching, one of the hottest topics in the build-up to that game surrounded Mohamed Salah. With the Real Madrid clash being the biggest game of Liverpool’s season, many wondered whether the star attacker would be fasting on Saturday.
The Egyptian is a practicing Muslim, and the tie in Kyiv coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which began on May 16. During this period, Muslims cannot consume food or drink liquid from sunrise until sunset, which would have allowed the former Roma ace roughly less than an hour to eat before taking to the pitch.
As a result, the question was would the Anfield attacker follow this rule or make an exception ahead of the Los Blancos meeting? Liverpool’s physiotherapist Ruben Pons has put the mystery to rest, however.
Speaking to Cadena SER, Pons confirmed that the 25-year-old will not be fasting in the build-up to the all-important game. He told the Spanish radio station: "We were in Marbella and the nutritionist established a work plan. Tomorrow and the day of the match he won't [be fasting], so it's not going to affect him."
It had initially been reported that Salah would not break from tradition and would abstain from eating and drinking of any sort during daylight hours. The Reds official has revealed otherwise, which would come as a huge boost for the Premier League outfit.
It should be noted that Muslims are allowed to break their fast when traveling, something the Egyptian will be doing. Sadio Mane and Emre Can are two other followers of Islam, but their plan remains unknown.
