On Saturday, second and third in the Premier League – Liverpool and Man City – will lock horns in an exciting clash. The meeting is one to watch, as it will see Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp reignite a rivalry that dates back to their time together in the Bundesliga.
However, their rivalry had no trace of animosity – there was no war of words or shoves like Wenger vs. Mourinho. Instead, Klopp and Pep respect one another, as witnessed in recent remarks made by the German boss.
The Reds tactician spoke of his Spanish counterpart ahead of their weekend run-in, praising the former Bayern Munich boss for his decision to come to England. In Germany, Guardiola ruled; in the Premier League, competition is stiffer. This is why Klopp feels that Guardiola made a brave choice.
“He could have had easier jobs in easier leagues, that is for sure. He was probably aware 100 per cent of the big challenge,” said Klopp, as per the Daily Mail.
“He knew he had a wonderful squad at Barcelona and a wonderful squad at Bayern. If you go to Barcelona as a new manager they will tell you, 'Don't forget, we play like Pep Guardiola played'.
“That's the biggest influence you can have. Bayern loved the years he was there. He is a fantastic manager.”
Klopp not only praised the Citizens boss, but ended one “myth” about the Man City tactician: that his entire game is possession dominated. Jurgen looked back at his first meeting with the Spaniard as a perfect example, with Bayern winning 3-0 playing a more direct approach.
“They changed their style of play against us a few times, not always, but a few times.
“A philosophy does not mean that you stick to it in each moment. If you have to adapt to your opponent then that is what we all do.
“There is an image that Pep is kind of all about possession and I am about counter-pressing. For me it is not important, I don't need names for things.”
