Match facts and other historical stats

  • Napoli have scored at least two goals in their past nine home Serie A games, whilst winning all of those
  • The Partenopei are undefeated in their past five home ties against Roma
  • Roma have netted at least twice in eight out of their last 10 league games
  • The Giallorossi have lost just two out of their last 24 Serie A games

Team news

Napoli

Having suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Atalanta before the international break, Napoli will be looking to rebound in this match. The Partenopei presently sit in second, four points behind Juventus, and although it's early in the season, they surely remember how the Bianconeri managed to overtake everyone after a bad start and eventually win their fifth straight Scudetto.

Furthermore, there's that home record, which has seen them win their last nine Serie A games at the Stadio San Paolo. However, the international hiatus has left many Partenopei fans less than pleased after key striker Arkadiusz Milik suffered an ACL injury whilst on duty for Poland. The former Ajax man, who is making his debut in Serie A, had been quite impressive since his arrival, and unfortunately will not be back in action until next year.

Roma

If Napoli have an impressive home record, Roma's away form is a whole other story entirely. In fact, if one believes in patterns, the Giallorossi will end up losing this game (a look at their past five games reveals a W-L-W-L-W track record). Furthermore, Luciano Spalletti's side have picked up just one point on the road this season and have historically struggled at the Stadio San Paolo. In fact, the visitors haven't beaten Napoli there since December 2011, when they overpowered them 3-1.

In terms of injuries, it's the same three players who are still out - Mario Rui, Thomas Vermalen, and Antonio Rudiger. Although there are concerns about key midfielder Radja Nainggolan after he suffered a muscular injury whilst on international duty, the Belgian star nonetheless should shake it off in time to start.

Match facts and other historical stats

  • Udinese became the first team to beat Juventus on matchday one at home last August (1-0 in Turin)
  • Before then, the Zebrette had managed to pick up just two points from their last eight meetings
  • Juventus have scored at least two goals in their past seven home league games
  • The Bianconeri have kept a clean sheet in six out of their last seven games against Udinese

Team news

Juventus

Juventus will be looking not just to make it four wins on the trot, but to avoid a repeat of the last time they welcome Udinese to Juventus Stadium. Back in August, the Zebrette handed them an opening day defeat by edging them out 1-0. It marked their first loss in over four years, and although they got some revenge by thrashing the Zebrette 4-0 in the reverse fixture, Massimiliano Allegri's side have lost just one Serie A match this season. And they would like to keep that that way for as long as possible.

Considering that Napoli and Roma are playing earlier in the day, Juventus will come into this game knowing that whatever happens, they will still be on top of the table at the end of this round. However, should the Partenopei beat the Giallorossi and La Vecchia Signora lose to Udinese, that relatively comfortable four point gap will be reduced to a much more nervous one. The game could also see the return of key midfielder Claudio Marchisio, who is slowly working his way back to full fitness after an ACL injury, whilst Giorgio Chiellini and Mehdi Benatia should be able to at least make the bench. Meanwhile, Kwadwo Asamoah and Daniele Rugani are still out, whilst Leonardo Bonucci won't be available due to personal reasons.

Udinese

Last season, Udinese shocked Juventus and the rest of Serie A by showing up and beating the reigning champions on matchday one. It was a historical achievement because the Bianconeri had never lost an opening match on their home turf, and the first time they had won since January 2011. Unfortunately, it has been a very unpleasant campaign so far for the Zebrette, who have just one win out of their last five games. In addition, they come into this game on a two-game losing streak and one point from their past four matches, which eventually saw Giuseppe Iachini sacked and Luigi Delneri brought in.

The visitors will hope that their opponents will already have their minds on their upcoming tie with Lyon and field a somewhat modified squad. However, it's still going to be a tough debut game for Delneri, who welcomes Emmanuel Badu back in midfield after an injury lay-off, but is will without the services of Silvan Widmer, Panagiotis Kone, and Francesco Lodi due to their own injury problems.
