Team news

Nantes

Back during the 1960's and 1970's, Nantes were regarded as one of the strongest clubs in French football's top flight. Unfortunately, they are no longer the force they once were, and finished in a rather disappointing 14th place last season. This term sees Les Jaunes et Verts kick things off with a new man on the tactician's bench following Michel Der Zakarian's departure: René Girard. Certainly, fans will be hoping that the former midfielder, who won three Ligue 1 titles with Bordeaux, can help revive their fortunes during this campaign.

Nantes come into this match having picked up a hard-fought 1-0 win over Dijon on matchday one to join seven other sides who earned maximum points on opening day. Unfortunately, if stats are any indicator, the hosts could be in for a tough time this Saturday. For starters, they haven't beaten Monaco since October 27, 2012, and following a one-all draw, went on to lose five meetings in a row. However, they did manage to stop the rot by keeping Monaco quiet to record a scoreless draw in their most recent meeting.

Monaco

Meanwhile, Leonardo Jardim's men will be full of confidence after earning a vital 2-1 road win against Villarreal, with goals from Bernardo Silva and Fabinho. Both players also were on target during Monaco's 2-2 draw against Guingamp, during which they had to fight back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a draw thanks to two late second-half efforts. Of course, the absence of striker Radamel Falcao - who is set to spend quite some time on the sidelines due to injury - certainly does not help, but supporters will nonetheless be encouraged by the team's performance in their Champions League play-off match in Spain.

However, it goes without saying that Jardim will be expecting a much better showing from his squad than on opening day as Monaco seek to maintain their good run of form against Nantes.

Broadcast info - PSG vs. Metz

Who's playing: If one were to pick one word to describe this upcoming tie featuring PSG and Metz, the best option would be "unbalanced". On one side of the pitch will be a team who steamrolled the opposition to clinch their fourth straight Ligue 1 title, whilst on the other will be a side freshly promoted from Ligue 2.

What time: Sunday, August 21st at 11:45 PST/14:45 EST/18:45 UTC/19:45 BST/20:45 CET

What stadium: PSG's famous home - the Parc des Princes - will be hosting this match. The iconic venue, which opened in 1972, has a seating capacity of 48,583.

Match facts and other historical stats - PSG vs. Metz

  • Meanwhile, Metz have failed to win any of their past 15 road games
  • Les Parisiens have scored at least four goals in their last four home ties
  • The last time Metz defeated PSG was on May 13, 2006, but one will have to go back to March 1996 to note the last time they beat PSG on their home turf.

Team news

PSG

Although they breezed through pre-season without much fuss, PSG are still a work in progress. With a new man on the bench, and without the talismanic presence of star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Les Parisiens will now be heavily counting on Edinson Cavani. The ex-Napoli man was rested for the team's first game following a thigh problem sustained whilst featuring in the Trophée des Champions, but now has returned to training and is expected to resume his spot in the starting XI for Sunday's match.

Meanwhile, another big-money signing - Thiago Silva - is still out due to an injury suffered during PSG's clash with Real Madrid at this summer's ICC tournament. Emery won't be able to count on new signing Jese, either, after the former Real Madrid starlet was struck down with a bout of appendicitis and will be out for the next couple of weeks.

Metz

What do Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, Liverpool's Sadio Mané, and Juventus new signing Miralem Pjanić all have in common? All three players once featured for Metz's youth academy and the senior squad before moving on to their present clubs. Currently under the leadership of Philippe Hinschberger - who himself spent his entire professional career with Les Grenats - Metz commenced their top-flight campaign in the best way possible: with a win.

Although they may be viewed as one of the minnows this season, these so-called small fish do have a bite, as Lille ended up discovering when they were beaten 3-2 last weekend. Will PSG be their next scalp this Sunday?
