England and Canada were both given a run for their money in the Round of 16, but managed to make their way to the last eight of the tournament. For the England Women's team, it was their first victory in the knockout stage of the World Cup something they will be hoping to build upon when they face the hosts.
Mark Sampson will be proud of the decisions he made in the last outing and some astute substitutions ensured that England came from behind to win the game. This was further aided by a stunning strike from Lucy Bronze which proved to be the winner.
Canada on the other hand recorded a 1-0 victory over Switzerland through a solitary goal from Belanger. Despite having fared so well coach John Herdman is determined that there is no reason to celebrate now and has asserted that his team must maintain their focus.
"You're not meant to have fun," he said. "I mean you climb Everest, it hurts, it's painful. We're now in the death zone where the oxygen's thinner. It's not meant to be fun.
"But when we look back, that's when we'll reflect and go 'Wow, what an achievement, what we've done for our country."'
Canada will now be playing England in the quarter-finals and are just two victories away to making their way into the final of the competition. However goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc has asserted that her side will not get carried away and that they will focus on the next game only for now.
"This is where a lot of people fail and fall," Karina LeBlanc said.
"We know that the end is there but that's not what we're staring at. We're staring at what we're doing today. What are we doing today to be better tomorrow than we are today. Each day improving and making sure we continue the climb and not fall off."
Herdman recognized that his side faces a daunting task ahead as they prepare for a match against an England side which is ranked as the sixth best in the world. However he is confident that his women will rise to the challenge.
"England are a very good team and I know my team loves rising to those sort of challenges. It's going to be great," Herdman said.
Canada will be proud of their journey in the tournament so far having made it to the quarter-final of the competition for the first time since 2003. Their win over Switzerland was also the first time they recorded a victory over a European opponent in the World Cup and they will be hoping to do it once again to advance to the next round.
