As the third member of Portuguese football's "Big Three", Sporting Lisbon predictably finished among the top trio of sides in this season's edition of the Primeira Liga. However, whilst Porto and Benfica would push the title race late into the campaign, Sporting fell off the pace and despite attempting a late comeback, had to settle for third spot and a Champions League play-off berth.
For the Leões, their last change at any silverware this season will be this year's Taça de Portugal, which they have not won since the 2007/2008 term. It was their 15th title meaning that they rank just behind Porto and well behind Benfica, who have lifted it on 25 occasions, so a win later this evening would tie them with Porto's total accumulation of 16 titles.
Meanwhile, Sporting Braga, who will be enjoying European football next season after an impressive fourth-placed finish, are competing in their first ever Taça de Portugal final in 17 years. The Arcebispos last made their appearance in 1998 where they were outclassed 3-1 by Porto and won their first and only title nearly 50 years ago in 1966.
Not suprisingly, Sporting are viewed as the favourites to emerge as the victors at the Estádio Nacional. Braga have not defeated their opponents since January 15, 2012 in a 2-1 win during a Primeira Liga clash and save for a friendly match back in August of 2013, have never even been able to salvage a draw in their four meetings since.
Nonetheless, as is in the case with football, any team that makes it to this stage certainly should not be discounted, and Braga have proved this by arriving at their first final in nearly two decades. Will Sporting catch up to Porto in terms of titles won? Or will Braga be on the winners' podium for the first time in almost half a century?
