One of the most incarnate rivalries in Mexican football will take place when Cruz Azul and America take Azul Stadium's pitch on Saturday. La Maquina arrive to this match desperate to make an impact, while Las Aguilas will try to maintain distance between them and the second place holders, Rayados de Monterrey.
Cruz Azul's players and coach know that, with a win against their most hated neighbours, their tournament would practically be saved, even if they don't make the playoffs. Los Cementeros need top-quality performances from Mariano Pavone, who scored last week after three months of not being able to net a goal, and from their attacking midfielders such as Marco Fabian and Mauro Formica. With their top shape football, Cruz Azul might be able to pull a stunner against the Apertura 2014 leaders. Starting on the bench, La Maquina will have Christian Gimenez, a midfielder that knows very well how to damage America.
Club America are barely three points away of mathematically securing their presence in the playoffs. Their only match lost this tournament was against the other Mexico City side, Pumas UNAM, that's why Antonio Mohamed and his staff want desperately a win against another popular side, so they can add credibility to their project with Las Aguilas. Oribe Peralta, Michael Arroyo and all-around player Miguel Layun will be the go-to guys for the yellow shirts, who are ranked among the top scoring attacking sides.
America still enjoy their victory against Cruz Azul for the Clausura 2013 championship. La Maquina earned a one goal lead in the first leg of the Finals, and scored first in the second match, which they played with one more man on the pitch after Jesus Molina was sent off. Las Aguilas did not surrender, and scoring twice in the final three minutes -including one goal by Las Aguilas' goalkeeper Moises Muñoz-, they managed to send the game to overtime. Cruz Azul never recovered from the huge blow of almost having the trophy in their hands, and eventually lost the Championship after a penalty shootout. With several players from that match still playing for both sides, we are sure this new match will be one for the ages.
