Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire will face off without their former captains Drogba and Eto'o on Wednesday, September 10.

Both Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire will head into this game having lost their two most talismanic players in Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o. Both men, who not only served as captains of their respective sides but were also the all-time leading scorers for their countries, decided to follow in the stead of a whole slew of stars and retire after this year's World Cup.

As a result, each side now has a huge void in their attacking options and will expect others to step up and fill the huge shoes left behind by these highly decorated African talents. The visitors also saw another mainstay of the national side, Didier Zokora, who was the most capped player for Les Éléphants opt to hang up his boots this past Monday.

Despite their poor World Cup campaign, Les Lions Indomptables coach Volker Finke has started fresh, with choosing to feature young debutants alongside old veterans in their most AFCON match against Congo, the first time the team had featured in a competitive fixture post Eto'o's retirement.

The result saw them record a 2-0 win over their opponents, their first win since their 1-0 positive result against Moldova in a friendly match in June with debutant Clinton N'Jie scoring his first ever senior goal and another youngster, Vincent Aboubakar sealing all three points.

Meanwhile, Côte d'Ivoire are also going through a period of transition. Out went Sabri Lamouchi after this summer's World Cup and in arrived Herve Renard, who, like his counterpart, has turned to youth as a way of rebuilding the squad. In their match against Sierra Leone, he opted to field teenage defender Franck Kessie in the heart of defense, with the youngster having an overall solid game.

And, in the absence of Drogba, Seydou Doumbia and Gervinho stepped up during the second half to ensure that their new boss didn't start off with a loss.

The last time both sides met was five years ago, when the visitors ended up as the 2-1 victors in a friendly clash. However, a lot has changed since then and indeed it will be interesting to see which side will gain the upper hand in what should be an interesting fixture for both fans and neutrals alike.
