Bayern travels to Freiburg this weekend to take on a team which is making waves in the Bundesliga this season.
Christian Streich’s little known outfit hasn’t only been taking the Black Forest by storm. The entire league is beginning to sit up and take notice. Freiburg played incredibly well in the Badem Württemberg derby against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. Freiburg took apart their decorated neighbours while their fans sang away heartily.

Freiburg has managed to get under Bayern’s skin recently. Their previous meeting was a drab 0-0 draw during a time of the season in which Bayern was struggling in every competition, namely January to March. However, in the Allianz Arena, Freiburg was absolutely demolished, 7-0, last season. Times have changed since then. A different Freiburg will play Bayern this time around.

Mario Gomez struck four goals in that 7-0 win. He returned to the league last week against Hannover in order to heap further misery upon Bayern’s league opponents. Gomez is obviously not ready to start yet but even if he is on the pitch for 26 seconds, he can score. Just ask Mirko Slomka and his team.

In 2010-11, the game in the Black Forest saw Franck Ribery grab a late winner for Bayern on a day in which the Bavarians just did not click. They were awful that day! Funnily enough, Gomez had notched the first goal of the night that day too, a goal that was eventually cancelled out by Papiss Demba Cisse’s equalizer.

Mensur Mujdza is suspended for this one. Streich will still be able to call on other stars of his modest squad such as Max Kruse. Kruse had a brilliant game against Stuttgart and will definitely trouble Bayern as will Cedric Makiadi. Daniel Caligiuri will also have to be kept away from goal. One man who can score great goals is Jan Rosenthal and he notched up another one against Stuttgart.

Bayern will have to be at their best to beat the side placed sixth in the table. Jupp Heynckes might decide to bench Bastian Schweinsteiger as the midfielder is one yellow card away from suspension. Heynckes expects his players to be disciplined. However, he surely wants his team to win their next two matches and extend their lead at the top, making it virtually impossible for BVB to catch up with them.

So, who will triumph at the Black Forest?

Prediction: Freiburg 1-2 Bayern
