Preview

The UEFA Champions League round of 16 has kicked off, with reigning champions Manchester City and record winners Real Madrid triumphing over Copenhagen and RB Leipzig, respectively. The focus now shifts to Wednesday, with PSG taking on Real Sociedad in the headline showdown.

The French champions will play at home in the first leg thanks to their mixed performance in the group stage. Luis Enrique's men were placed in the Group of Death alongside Dortmund, Newcastle, and AC Milan, and while they secured qualification, PSG's pathway to the round of 16 was anything but plain sailing.

Mbappe and Co. kicked things off with a lovely 2-0 victory at home against eventual group winners Dortmund, but Matchday 2 ended in a horrible 4-1 loss away to Newcastle. The Ligue 1 champions would win only one game from then on, but that was enough to see them pip the Rossoneri and the Magpies to the second spot.

The 2020 UEFA Champions League runners-up tore Milan apart 3-0 at the Parc des Princes before registering a controversial draw at home against Newcastle, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a dubious stoppage-time penalty.

Since then, PSG has gone on a fantastic run. Not only are the Ligue 1 heavyweights unbeaten in their last 16 games, but Enrique's side has won all but two of their last 10 matches, with those two exceptions being one-all and two-all draws with Lille and Brest.

Given that the second leg of this tie will be held at the Anoeta Stadium in early March, Mbappe and Co. must ensure their home advantage in this fixture does not go to waste.

Unlike PSG, Real Sociedad performed admirably well in the group stage. While the Spanish club was not drawn into a group of death, La Real was pitted against last season's runners-up Inter Milan yet still managed to win their group.

The Liga outfit drew with the Nerazzurri both home and away but finished ahead of the Italian powerhouses thanks to a superior goal difference. Additionally, Real Sociedad has not lost a single game this season in Europe, but that run will be put to the test.

Domestically, things have not been going as great for Imanol Alguacil's side. As things stand, Real Sociedad could miss out on European football altogether as they sit seventh in the table.

The visitors have won only nine out of 24 Spanish top-flight fixtures. Additionally, the club is on a four-game winless run, losing to Osasuna most recently while drawing against Rayo Vallecano, Girona, and Mallorca. Can they turn things around at the Parc des Princes?

Team news

PSG: The hosts are without Presnel Kimpembe, Milan Skriniar, Sergio Rico, Nuno Mendes, and Layvin Kurzawa. Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, and Warren Zaire-Emery should return to the lineup while Kylian Mbappe is expected to be fit for this game.

Real Sociedad: Sheraldo Becker, Kieran Tierney, Alvaro Odriozola, Carlos Fernandez, and Aihen Munoz are all unavailable. However, Takefusa Kubo, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino are available and should lead La Real at the Parc des Princes. Brais Mendez will also be hoping for a start.

Key stats

  • PSG has not made it past the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in the last two seasons.

  • These two clubs have never met before in this competition.

  • However, PSG was eliminated in five of the last six encounters with Spanish clubs in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage.

  • Real Sociedad has lost three of its six meetings with French clubs (W2, D1) while losing the two matches that took place in the UEFA Champions League.
