Preview

Matchday 3 in the UEFA Champions League is underway, with Group F, the Group of Death, taking center stage on Wednesday. Newcastle, who currently top the table, take on Dortmund in one of this week's standout games as the Magpies aim to secure a second consecutive win.

While the Premier League side were forced to settle for a point — and happily so — in their first UEFA Champions League game in 20 years, playing out a goalless draw at AC Milan despite being dominated, Howe's men grabbed their first win in the following round.

To everyone's surprise, that came against PSG, with the Saudi-owned side beating the Qatari-owned giants 4-1 in front of an electrifying St. James' Park crowd.

Miguel Almiron scored the opener, with Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, and Fabian Schar later getting on the scoresheet. Theo Hernandez scored a consolation goal for the visitors but that mattered not as Newcastle sent out a message to teams across the continent — they mean business.

In the Premier League, things have been going extremely well for the Magpies as of late. They sit just outside the top five currently, which is not significant at this point of the campaign. After losing three consecutive top-flight games between late August and early September, Isak and Co. are yet to lose a game since and will want to keep this run going when Dortmund roll in.

Unlike Newcastle, who sit top of the table, Dortmund find themselves on the opposite end of Group F, rotting dead bottom after only two games. The German club are one of two teams without a win, the other being AC Milan, but while the Rossoneri are unbeaten, Terzic's men have lost one and drawn another.

That defeat came in the opening game, losing 2-0 to the very same PSG team that Newcastle dismantled in the subsequent round. Following that game, Reus and Co. hosted AC Milan and played out a goalless draw to secure their first point of the campaign.

However, BVB remain unbeaten domestically. They are fourth in the table, trailing Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, and Bayern Munich, but with six wins and two draws in their opening eight games, no team has managed to beat Dortmund in the German top flight.

In fact, that goalless draw at home to Milan was the only game Dortmund have failed to win in their last five outings. The Germans will now need to carry this form into the UEFA Champions League.

Team news

Newcastle: Sandro Tonali, who looks set to be banned over betting offenses, should be available for this game. Alexander Isak has faced some knee issues but should be fine for this clash while Joe Willock is nearing a return. Sven Botman and Harvey Barnes, however, remain sidelined.

Dortmund: Mateu Morey, Youssoufa Moukoko, and Julian Ryerson are all unavailable for the visitors. However, the away side have Niclas Fullkrug available to lead the line and Julian Brandt to spearhead the midfield.

Key stats

  • Newcastle are on an eight-game unbeaten run.

  • Dortmund, meanwhile, have won only one of their last seven UEFA Champions League away games.

  • The German giants have lost their last six visits to Premier League clubs across all competitions.

  • The Magpies, on the other hand, have won four and drawn one of their last five clashes with German clubs.
