According to the Daily Mail, a few key Premier League players are set to miss out on a ticket to Russia.

Currently, England is gearing up for a friendly against Italy. While this game is not a competitive match, it is a 90-minute opportunity for the players to show Gareth Southgate why they deserve a spot in the 2018 World Cup.

Only 23 players can be chosen for the summer tournament, with June 4 being the deadline. The Three Lions will have to leave behind a few talented players, as there is space for only a selective few. According to Matt Lawton of the Daily Mail, here are the players Southgate plans on calling up.

Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford (Everton), Jack Butland (Stoke), and Joe Hart (West Ham)

Here there are no surprises. Pickford and Butland will probably battle it out to be Southgate’s number one choice, but Joe Hart’s experience in between the sticks cannot be counted out.

Defenders: Kyle Walker (Man City), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham), Harry Maguire (Leicester), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Man United), John Stones (Man City), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), and Ashley Young (Man United)

This position is where a few eyebrows will be raised. While the usual suspects are there – Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Ashley Young – there is no room for Chris Smalling and Danny Rose.

Midfielders: Eric Dier (Tottenham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Jesse Lingard (Man United), Jake Livermore (West Brom), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Man City), Adam Lallana (Liverpool)

Livermore’s inclusion might shock many, but the Daily Mail report claims England is short on defensive midfielders. Lallana has struggled with injuries this season but is still highly rated by the Three Lions boss. Unfortunately, Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley, and Danny Drinkwater are likely to be excluded.

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Man United), Jamie Vardy (Leicester), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal)

The first three attackers on this list are a given. According to the article, a fit Sturridge would be chosen over Welbeck, but the Liverpool attacker’s injury woes will rob him of a spot.

Theo Walcott is also set to miss out on yet another World Cup, but that was expected. Surprisingly, Brighton goalscorer Glenn Murray has not been mentioned despite scoring 11 goals in 28 Premier League apps this season.

This is merely the rumored list, not the official one. This means there could be differences when the announcement comes in the following months.
