On Tuesday, Real Madrid and Atletico will lock horns in the Champions League semi-finals. The first leg will be played at Santiago Bernabeu, meaning the home advantage will go to the defending champions.
Whilst Los Blancos are known for having one of the scariest attacks, Los Rojiblancos are famed for being one of the toughest defensive units. This season, however, Diego Simeone’s back four have been below par.
As a result, we ask: who has the better Champions League defense in the Madrid derby? Here, we take a look.
Real Madrid
Played: 10
Lost: 0
Conceded: 15
Clean sheets: 0
Atletico
Played: 10
Lost: 1
Conceded: 5
Clean sheets: 6
A look at these numbers shows that while Atletico concede 0.5 goals per game, their neighbors concede 1.5 every 90 minutes. A lot of other factors could play a role in this – Oblak outperforming Navas and the fact that Los Blancos have faced BVB, Napoli, and Bayern Munich en route to the last 4.
Maybe it is down to the fact that as a team, Los Rojiblancos commit more to defending. Although Simeone’s men have made only 34 tackles compared to Real Madrid’s 41; Godin and Co. have recovered 514 balls, made 28 blocks, and cleared 105 balls – more than the Champions League holders.
Simeone’s defense will be put to the test, but with a disciplined Sergio Ramos, none can underestimate Zidane’s back four.
