Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team are in luck. Early on Saturday, it was announced that Messi’s international ban had been successfully overturned by the South American giants.
The Barcelona superstar had been slapped with a four-game suspension for verbally abusing an assistant referee. The incident occurred during La Albiceleste’s 1-0 win over Chile.
The 29-year-old missed the trip to Bolivia, with the two-time World Cup champions suffering an embarrassing 2-0 defeat. This result had fans fearing Argentina would not qualify with La Pulga.
The Argentina FA had submitted evidence to prove Messi’s innocence on Friday, and were quickly able to overturn the punishment. This means the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will make a quick return to the national side.
Meanwhile, whilst the weekend began on with positive news for the Barcelona icon, his Real Madrid nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo woke up to terrible news.
According to reports coming out of Spain, the Portugal captain is the most recent Liga star to be charged for tax fraud. The 32-year-old reportedly failed to declare 6 million Euros in image rights from 2013 to 2014, a heinous act which could earn him a year behind bars.
