Chelsea are yet to get their hands on this season’s Premier League crown, which is firmly in their grip, but are already strengthening their squad for the upcoming campaign.
According to the Mirror, the Blues are favorites to land one of the league’s highly-rated defenders: Virgil van Dijk. This means that Antonio Conte’s side will hand a huge blow to Man City, another club interested in the Dutch defender.
Everton and Liverpool are two other clubs keen on the Southampton ace, but Chelsea are confident they have won the race. The 25-year-old won’t come cheap, as the league leaders will have to shell out £50m to complete the deal.
Conte, despite already boasting a mean backline, could benefit from van Dijk’s addition. Club captain John Terry appears destined to leave Stamford Bridge over the summer, as a contract renewal is unlikely.
Guardiola will be devastated to miss out on the Dutchman. His interest in the former Celtic man is no hidden secret, with the player’s team-mates giving him a Citizens jersey on Christmas.
The Etihad side have struggled in defense, as their huge investment on John Stones backfired. The Englishman has been prone to defensive errors this season, leading to Pep’s search for an upgrade.
