Both teams head into the 1st leg clash on the back of domestic league wins, though Los Blancos may start the game without two key players.

On Tuesday, European giants Real Madrid will lock horns with Manchester City in the first leg of their semi-final match-up. With the first tie being played at the Etihad, the tournament's most successful side make the trip to England with the goal of grabbing a decisive away result.

Manuel Pellegrini's side are playing at this stage of the tournament for the very first time, and will face a team which have the most last 4 appearances under their belt. Only one side will move on to the final, but who will get the upper hand in the first match?

Team news – who’s fit and who’s not?

Of course, being one of the biggest names in world football and the tournament’s highest scorer – this season (16) and in history (93) – much of the pre-game talk surrounded the fitness of star attacker Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 31-year-old injured his thigh in Wednesday victory over Villarreal in La Liga, as well as team-mate Karim Benzema on Saturday, but started running again during Sunday’s training practice. Luckily for Los Blancos, Marca report that both could play a part in Tuesday’s game, but from the bench.

In addition, the 10-time Champions League winners should welcome back Dani Carvajal, having overcome a knock to the knee, with the Spaniard expected to slot right back into the starting eleven.

Manuel Pellegrini’s are also facing a race against the clock to have a key player pass a fitness test in the form of Yaya Toure, with the Ivorian midfield ace injuring his thigh in the 4-0 win over Stoke on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the Citizens will welcome back Kevin de Bruyne – the hero from the win over PSG – and captain Vincent Kompany, with Raheem Sterling also expected to be back in the starting lineup come Tuesday’s match.

Head to head

This is the first time Man City have made it this far in the competition, but Real Madrid are eyeing to end Aguero and Co.’s historic run. The two clubs, however, don’t boast any rivalry in Europe, having met only in 2012/13 season’s group stage.

Les Merengues beat the Premier League giants 3-2 at the Bernabeu, but were unable to win in England, drawing 1-1. Nonetheless, the Madrid giants boast a wonderful record against English clubs.

The Spanish heavyweights are unbeaten in 8 games against English teams, winning 6 and drawing 2. Furthermore, the last Premier League side to knock out of this competition was Liverpool back in 2008/09, winning 5-0 on aggregate.
