All club football has ceased, as yet another edition of international friendlies has dawned upon us.
With the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament right around the corner – its June 10 kick-off is less than three months away – many of the continents national sides will look to take advantage of this international break to evaluate their squad before heading to France.
Two of those national outfits are Turkey and Sweden, as both teams prepare to face off on Thursday in preparation for the summer tournament.
Turkey
Fatih Terim’s boys will play hosts to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Co., as Istanbul will welcome the Scandinavian giants to the New Antalya Stadium.
The home side head into this game in great form, having booked their Euro 2016 spot after finishing the qualification stage as their best third-placed team.
Turkey’s clinched their ticket to France after winning 5, drawing 3, and losing only 2 fixtures in the qualifiers. Furthermore, Ay Yıldızlılar are undefeated in their last 11 matches in all competitions, winning 8 of those fixtures.
Arda Turan and Co.’s last home game, though, ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw with Greece; however, they did seal victory in their four games prior to the goalless tie, scoring 8 and conceding only once.
Sweden
Whilst Turkey reserved their spot in Euro 2016 as the qualifiers best third-placed team, Sweden had to secure their place in the highly-anticipated summer tournament the hard way courtesy of a play-off clash with Denmark.
Led by superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Blågult prevailed and will thus lock horns with Turkey in preparation for the tournament.
Although the home side boast an impressive form as of late, Sweden also head into this friendly with high confidence, as Erik Hamrén’s crew are undefeated in six, winning 4 and drawing 2. In addition, the Scandinavian nation form away from home is pleasant, having lost only once on their road in their last 7 games in all competitions (W3, D3).
Head to head
The last time these two nations met was back in 2014 in (coincidentally) Istanbul. Turkey came away victorious in that game courtesy of a 2-1 win; however, Sweden were undefeated against the Turks in the 5 before the 2-1 defeat, an unbeaten run which saw 4 draws and only 1 win.
It is important to note that Ay Yıldızlılar are undefeated in 6 games in Istanbul, winning 4 and drawing 2.
