Barcelona forward Luis Suarez has sensationally revealed that he was warned against joining Arsenal, their Tuesday opponents in the Champions League. The Uruguay international claimed that the Gunners were openly interested in signing him, but it is former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who warned him against a move to the Emirates Stadium. The 29-year-old now believes that his conversation with the former England international was 'one of the best in his life.’
The Uruguayan joined the Reds in 2011 for £22.8 million, and scored 133 goals in 82 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside club. He is expected to start today alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr against Arsenal in their Champions League last 16 first leg fixture at the Emirates Stadium.
In a post-match interview, he revealed:
''Arsenal’s interest in me was very public – I don’t think it is any secret.
''I had a private conversation with Stevie after training and he told me to give Liverpool another season – and to wait for Barcelona.’’
He added:
''Looking back now it is one of the most important conversations of my life, but that is Stevie, he was a captain who was always ready to give his players advice.’’
