Hamburg are in familiar surroundings in the Bundesliga table at the moment; they sit in the relegation zone in the Bundesliga, two spots above their bitter rivals from the North, Werder Bremen. Josef Zinnbauer has not been able to revitalize the squad in the manner in which he would have hoped to do so. However, he has a victory against Borussia Dortmund and a draw against FC Bayern München to show for his efforts. Bayern, coming off a midweek win over Manchester City had drawn against Hamburg in September in the league.
Bayern has drawn only three matches in the league so far, winning the remainder and taking control of the top spot in the table as a result. One of those draws came in the past week against none other than a gigantic rival from the past, Borussia Mönchengladbach. Gladbach approached Bayern in a highly disciplined manner as preached by their manager Lucien Favre. At the end, while Yann Sommer had to keep out some excellent shots, Manuel Neuer had to deal with more dangerous ones on the counterattack. Gladbach could have easily won the game in spite of the ridiculous amount of possession Bayern had. They, perhaps more importantly, showed the league how to approach Bayern.
The mutual feeling amongst the Bavarians seemed to be that the result was a fair one. They will nonetheless hope to beat Hamburg convincingly, something they have done with ease recently (aside from the aforementioned September encounter of course). HSV, following a good mini run of results, faltered again against Hertha Berlin, losing by no less than a three goal margin.
