Southampton demolished Sunderland 3-1 while West Ham United, surprisingly in fourth position, defeated Burnley 3-1. Things were more dramatic for Liverpool as they needed two own goals to beat hosts Queens Park Rangers 3-2; four of the game’s five goals were scored after the 86th minute.
This Monday, the stage is set for Manchester United to do what is expected of them – which is to beat fifteenth-placed West Bromwich Albion. The Red Devils are 11 points off the summit. In other words, they possess half of the Blues’ amount of points.
“We have to be professional, we have to evaluate and we have to improve,” manager Louis van Gaal said.
“We have to learn from our faults. There is no psychological benefit from being in fourth.”
If fighting for the EPL trophy remains a daring ambition for now, breaking into the Top Four is totally realistic. Victory today would place Man United in fourth place with 14 points.
The Red Devils are looking to win for the third time in a row since collapsing 5-3 away to Leicester City a month ago. Interestingly, although nine places separate them from West Brom, the latter are only three points behind. The competition is indeed tight in the English Premier League, this season.
