Manchester United are gearing up for their penultimate game of the 2023-24 Premier League season as Ten Hag's struggling side aim to finish the campaign on a high and qualify for Europe. Unfortunately, the Red Devils will face a tough opponent as they welcome rivals Newcastle United to Old Trafford in a highly-anticipated 3 p.m. ET showdown.

The goal for Manchester United is to return to winning ways. The English giants are on a two-game losing streak and are winless in their last three matches, thus dropping down to eighth in the table as a result.

A 1-1 draw at home to relegated Burnley kicked off this horrible run, with Ten Hag's men losing back-to-back fixtures after that. First came the embarrassing 4-0 loss away to Crystal Palace before suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal at the Theatre of Dreams.

Images of Old Trafford's leaky roof best summed up their current situation as Sir Jim Ratcliffe watched his team disappoint at home to one of their biggest rivals. Nonetheless, European football is still within reach for the Red Devils and as a result, Ten Hag's men must find their feet as soon as possible.

Tottenham sit nine points ahead with only two games left, thus making fifth-placed Spurs an unreachable target for Manchester United. However, Newcastle and Chelsea, who sit sixth and seventh in the standings respectively, are only three points ahead of the 20-time English champions.

While Bruno Fernandes and Co. cannot leapfrog the Magpies with a win on Wednesday due to Newcastle's superior goal difference, Ten Hag's men can draw level with Eddie Howe's side on points should they win this showdown. Likewise, they could do the same with Chelsea if the Blues, who are also in action on Wednesday, lose away to Brighton.

UEFA Champions League qualification is no longer on the table, with Aston Villa claiming the last ticket to Europe's premier club competition. However, the hosts can still make it to the UEFA Europa League.

Victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final later this month would grant the Red Devils backdoor entry into that competition but overcoming Guardiola's men is a tough ask. Manchester United should thus focus on achieving European football through the league and to do that, they must beat Newcastle at the Theatre of Dreams.

While the hosts have slumped into terrible form in 2024, Newcastle have emerged out of exactly that. It was not long ago when the Magpies lost six out of seven Premier League games between early December and mid-January, with some going as far as questioning whether Eddie Howe should be sacked.

The Saudi-owned side also crashed out of the UEFA Champions League group stage despite their unforgettable 4-1 win over PSG in their first home game of the season, ultimately finishing bottom of their group.

Just as is the case with Manchester United, Newcastle have suffered horrendous injuries throughout the campaign and have been without marquee midfield signing Sandro Tonali for nearly the entirety of the campaign due to a betting-related suspension.

Despite all of this, the visitors have slowly regained form and have thus climbed to sixth in the table, level on points with seventh-placed Chelsea but ahead on goal difference. Isak and Co. are unbeaten in all but two of their last 10 league games, suffering defeats to only Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

While Howe's men were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Brighton in their most recent fixture, Isak and Co. have secured huge wins in the English top-flight recently, beating Tottenham 4-0 a month ago while thrashing the now relegated Sheffield United and Burnley 5-1 and 4-1, respectively.

As a result, the visitors should enter their showdown with Manchester United with confidence. Furthermore, the Magpies boast a lovely record against their rivals, beating them 1-0 earlier in the season thanks to an Anthony Gordon goal. Howe's men also thrashed the English giants 3-0 when they met in the Carabao Cup round of 16 late last year and will be aiming to repeat that Old Trafford heroics when they lock horns on Wednesday.

Team news

Manchester United: Lisandro Martinez is back for this game, with Ten Hag confirming that the Argentine will make the squad. However, Willy Kambwala will likely start this game alongside Jonny Evans. Question marks linger over Amad Diallo after he suffered an injury in the defeat to Arsenal. Mason Mount is unavailable while Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford face a race against time to be fit for this tie.

Newcastle: Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, and Joelinton could all return from injuries for this tie. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson missed training but only due to illness.

Key stats

  • Newcastle are on a three-game winning streak vs. Newcastle, winning their last two league encounters while eliminating them from the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

  • If the Magpies win this fixture, they will become the only team besides Manchester City to beat the Red Devils in four straight fixtures.

  • However, Manchester United boast an impressive home record against Newcastle, losing only once in 28 Premier League showdowns with their rivals at Old Trafford (W18 D9).

  • Furthermore, Eddie Howe is yet to win a game at Old Trafford in six previous attempts.

  • Manchester United will register their worst points tally in Premier League history if they lose either of their last two games.
