What is the current form of Barcelona compared to Real Madrid?

Barcelona currently sits atop La Liga with 18 points after nine matches. Things have not been rosy for the Catalans who have won just one game in their last five league games.

In a broader view, Valverde's men remain unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions. The team's last defeat came via a 2-1 scoreline away to Leganes on September 26.

Real Madrid makes the trip to Camp Nou without tasting victory in La Liga since September 22. Los Blancos sit in eighth place with 14 points after nine games.

The European champions have successively lost their last two league games. Up until the 2-1 defeat to Leganes in their previous league game, Julen Lopetegui's men were on a five-game goal drought across all competitions.

What is the current position of Barcelona and Real Madrid on La Liga table?

Players to watch in the first Clasico without both Messi and Cristiano

Barcelona

  • Luis Suarez

In the absence of Lionel Messi, his able partner-in-crime should be able to step up and fill the void left. The 31-year-old Uruguayan striker has actively contributed his quota in helping Barcelona secure its current status of being table-toppers in La Liga.  The ex-Liverpool man has scored four times and has six assists to his name aside a few indirect involvements in goals.

  • Arthur

Very little noise was made and not much was know about the 22-year-old midfielder's before his arrival from Gremio in January this year. However, he has proved to be worth every penny spent on him.

Featuring alongside Sergio Busquets, Arthur has been deployed on a "Xavi-esque" role and has hardly put a foot wrong when given the nod. Per his stats, he is not the flashy type but a rather discrete and resourceful player. He could be the key to winning the midfield battle for Barcelona.

Real Madrid

  • Gareth Bale

In the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, the Welshman has proved to be Real Madrid's go-to guy in getting the goals. While a lot is yet to go in favor of his club this season, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur star has contributed three goals and two assists for Los Blancos in La Liga this season. Alongside top-scorer Karim Benzema, the pair should be able to cause the Catalans a few problems.

  • Sergio Ramos

With Lionel Messi's absence for Barcelona in Sunday's game confirmed, a crunch battle awaits the Real Madrid skipper as Luis Suarez looks set to lead in attack for the host. Still, the experience accumulated over the years should come in handy for the 32-year-old defender. He may also not shy away from featuring in attack as he has two goals to his name so far, both of which were scored from the penalty spot.

Who are the players injured or suspended from El Clasico 2018?

Barcelona vs Real Madrid pre-match talk

Ahead of the dreaded encounter, both Ernesto Valverde and Julen Lopetegui stressed on what should be expected in the absence of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. In addition, the latter was rather blasé in answering questions relating to his purported imminent sack from Real Madrid.

Pressed for an answer on the subject by a reporter at his pre-match press conference, Lopetegui responded: "I'm not concerned what you are anyone else says.

"We're focused on strengthening the things that can help us to improve and prepare for the game.

"I have 100% energy now and I won't waste even a 0.001% to answer your question."

On the other hand, Ernesto Valverde was displeased with the absence of his skipper Lionel Messi and hinted at a probable change in how his team will set-up.

"The Clasico existed before Cristiano and Messi. There were great players. There was tension. There were even pigs' heads flying!

"The absence of Messi is an important one for us, although the team took a step forward the other day (in beating Inter Milan 2-0 on Wednesday night). Without Messi, you have to change some things.

"It's strange, but we have to look forward."
