The Costa Rican defender says goodbye to the MLS to join the Serie A side after the club confirmed his transfer on Tuesday.

After being a key player in Costa Rica’s memorable campaign during this year’s World Cup in Brazil, Giancarlo González raised interest from various European clubs to get his services. At the end, the Serie A will be the next destination for the 26-year-old as officially confirmed by the club on Monday in a deal reported to be worth $5 million, becoming the highest transfer fee that the MLS has received for a defender. Gonzalez signed a three-year deal with Palermo.

González started his career in 2007 in Costa Rica playing for Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, making 97 appearances over a five-year spell at the club.  In 2012 he moved to Norway to play for first division club Valerenga, where made 37 appearances and scored two goals.  After that, he joined the MLS in 2014 to play for Columbus Crew where he made 17 appearances.

The defender has also enjoyed a successful career playing for his country where he has made 40 appearances. He featured in all of Costa Rica matches in this year’s World Cup where ‘Los Ticos’ defeated the likes of Uruguay and Italy. Costa Rica managed to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament but they were dramatically knocked out by the Netherlands in penalty kicks.

Via Twitter the player confirmed his transfer and expressed his gratitude towards Columbus Crew fans.

"I'm happy to take this step and sign for Palermo." He mentioned.
