Mexican coach Juan Carlos Osorio decided to give new players a chance to wear El Tri's jersey, with mixed results coming out of his experiments. Others, such as Giovani Dos Santos, returned to the squad after a lengthy absence, and answered to the Colombian's trust with a PK goal.
For this match, Mexico won't have Eintracht Frankfurt's midielder Marco Fabián, since he returned to his team after Saturday's clash. Giovani's sibling, Jonathan, was dropped from the squad due to injury, which is also the case of former Olympiakos' striker Alan Pulido.

Los Canaleros also used this game to call up new blood, considering that neither manager wanted to show all their stuff in a friendly match with the WC Qualifier just around the corner. Regardless of the absences of key players such as Jaime Penedo, Roman Torres and Blas Pérez, Panama's coach Hernán Darío Gomez admitted that there's a sense of rematch between his men after that controversial Gold Cup elimination more than one year ago.
"This game against Mexico is as relevant as the one we'll play next month. There's no such thing as a friendly match when we face Mexico."
