Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final clash between Manchester United and Barcelona might have been short of the spectacle it was promised to be but a few players could lift their heads up high for their input in the night's encounter.
One of such is Red Devils starlet Scott McTominay whose performance in his side's 1-0 loss at Old Trafford has attracted massive plaudits across his club's fanbase and beyond. In a game where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to resort to a makeshift lineup devoid of the usual midfield duo of Herrera and Matic, the 22-year-old academy graduate stepped up to produce what seems like his best-ever performance since his senior debut.

Featuring alongside Fred and Paul Pogba, the Scottish international gave Manchester United an edge in a midfield battle involving Barca's Arthur, Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Ramos. To reinforce his influence, Statman Dave has revealed that McTominay won 100 percent aerial duels and tackles, recorded an 80 percent pass accuracy, registered five ball recoveries and completed two out of three take-ons.
The young midfielder has since been hailed on social media for his stellar performance alongside Barcelona's Gerard Pique. The latter also proved solid at the back for the Blaugrana and marred the chances of his former side securing a vital home goal in his return to Old Trafford after 11 years.
Here is what fans had to say about McTominay's performance:
Scott McTominay was utterly incredible. That's one of those performances where you see a boy turn into a man. He looked like he'd been playing at the top level for years, and to say that against a Barcelona side with Busquets, Vidal, Rakitic is saying something. Wow.

Best game Fred and McTominay had for United. With Matic being poor and Herrera gone, that's good news for next season.

Scott McTominay the best player on the pitch when he's playing against Lionel Messi. This one is for the history books.

Missed opportunity that, with a bit more quality Barca were vulnerable. Needed at least a goal in this leg. Mctominay and Fred very impressive, Young was atrocious. Another big away performance needed #MUNBAR #FullTimeDoc

Barcelona were not particularly impressive but United didn't manage an attempt on target. McTominay a plus and #mufc much more balanced with a back four. Seven games they've started with a back three this season: Lost five and drawn two.

McTominay good tonight, never in awe of the stellar names lined up against him, never hid, tireless in his pressing and always looking to be positive in possession. #MUNBAR

Scott McTominay was Manchester United's best player tonight. Didn't put a foot wrong.
