One of the most important North London derbies in recent memory is upon us, with Arsenal set to visit Tottenham this Sunday in a crucial fixture in this season's Premier League title race and top-four battle.

While much of the pre-match conversation surrounds Tottenham and the potential to deny bitter rivals Arsenal the title, it should be pointed out that Spurs are fighting their own crucial battle this season.

Ange Postecoglou's side sit fifth in the table and are thus fighting to qualify for UEFA Champions League football next season. However, Son and Co. find themselves seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, who drew 2-2 with Chelsea on Saturday.

Tottenham have three games in hand over Unai Emery's men, which is a huge boost, but the North London outfit will need to win as many of their six remaining Premier League fixtures as possible to finish in the top four.

Tottenham have the home advantage in Sunday's North London Derby and the home side typically wins in this fixture. However, Spurs were beaten 2-0 on their own turf last season during Antonio Conte's tumultuous final season in charge.

Additionally, the hosts have endured a dip in form recently, with Postecoglou's men winning only four of their last eight Premier League fixtures. This includes a 2-1 loss to Wolves, a 3-0 defeat against Fulham, and a 4-0 thrashing at Newcastle in their most recent fixture.

Swedish striker Alexander Isak scored a brace in that tie, leaving many Spurs fans wondering whether their manager should inject pragmatism into his free-flowing brand of football. Only time will tell whether the Australian tactician adopts such an approach for Sunday's derby.

While Tottenham are battling to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, neighbors Arsenal have bigger fish to fry. For the second season running, Mikel Arteta's side are locked in a heated title race with Manchester City, with this battle set to go down to the wire.

Liverpool have all but been eliminated from the race following Saturday's 2-2 draw at West Ham, thus leaving a two-horse race between the North London giants and Pep Guardiola's winning machine. Saka and Co. currently sit a point above second-placed Manchester City but Mikel's side have played a game extra and will thus miss out on the title if the Cityzens win all their remaining fixtures.

However, Arsenal have the superior goal difference. This means one slip-up from Man City, be it a draw or defeat, could suffice. Regardless, none of this will matter if the visitors are unable to beat Tottenham on Sunday.

The Gunners pulled off the league double over Spurs last season but should face a trickier test at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this term. Their rivals will have a huge say in the title race given their upcoming clashes with Arsenal and City, and given their rivalry, the hosts will be keen on denying their neighbors the league.

Fortunately for the away side, form favors them heavily. Arsenal enter this game on the back of a huge 5-0 thrashing of Chelsea, with Kai Havertz and Ben White scoring a brace each while captain Martin Odegaard delivered a performance that will not be forgotten for the foreseeable future.

While the Gunners have won only two of their last five fixtures, two of those three slip-ups came in the UEFA Champions League, with the North London giants drawing at home and losing away to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals before exiting the competition.

In the league, Arsenal have only failed to win two games in 2024. One was the goalless draw away to Manchester City while the other was the gutting 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa.

Furthermore, Saka and Co. have been unstoppable in front of goal while recording a stunning nine clean sheets this calendar year. Beating Tottenham away from home will not be easy but the visitors should head to Tottenham with all the confidence in the world.

Team news

Tottenham: The hosts will sadly be without Destiny Udogie, who impressed in the 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season, after being ruled out for the rest of the campaign due to injury. Pedro Porro also has fitness concerns but will be involved in some capacity.  Fraser Forster, Manor Solomon, and Ryan Sessegnon are Spurs' other absentees but Richarlison should be back for this tie.

Arsenal: Jurrien Timber, who suffered an ACL injury on Matchday 1, is close to returning after playing for the U21s on Monday and scoring a sensational goal. This means Arteta could have a fully-fit squad to choose from. Kai Havertz, who has been fantastic in the no.9 spot, will likely lead the lead alongside Bukayo Saka, with Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Thomas Partey starting in midfield. Gabriel Martinelli will hope to start but will have to oust and in-form Leandro Trossard.

Key stats

  • The last time Arsenal visited Spurs, they won 2-0 thanks to a Hugo Lloris own goal and a Martin Odegaard worldie.

  • The Gunners have not won twice in a row away to Tottenham since beating them at White Hart Lane in three consecutive encounters between 1987 and 1988.

  • Spurs have only one win in their last six Premier League showdowns with their North London rivals, drawing one and losing four.

  • The hosts have not kept a clean sheet at home in any of their last 12 Premier League games.

  • Arteta's side have kept a clean sheet in all of their last six away games in the league and are looking to become only the third side to do this over seven consecutive fixtures since Chelsea (2008) and Man United (2008-09).
