Schalke, a more compact and pragmatic side than the Schalke of yesteryear, will be coming into this one on the back of a draw against a determined Werder Bremen side. They are perhaps disappointed as they conceded a late equalizer. They went into that match on the back of a loss to Real Madrid, 0-2, in Gelsenkirchen. They are sitting fourth in the league currently, ten points ahead of Dortmund. Schalke won the first edition of the derby in Gelsenkirchen, 2-1.
The home side will be without the newly reinjured Lukasz Piszczek, Kevin Grosskreutz and Erik Durm. Sokratis and Neven Subotic are doubtful. For Schalke, their speedy winger, Jefferson Farfan is out. The heart of their side, Julian Draxler, defensive lynchpins Atsuto Uchida and Chinedu Obasi, midfielder Jan Kirchoff are all out as well. Timon Wellenreuther will continue in goal as both of his fellow goalkeepers are still out.
