Who are the 2014-15 Bundesliga promoted teams?

The Bundesliga's relegation and promotion battles really took center stage last season as the title battle ended early. The first team to earn promotion was FC Köln. Köln's last match in the Bundesliga never quite finished. The referee blew his whistle 89 minutes into their contest against Bayern on Matchday 34 of the 2010-11 season as fans, realizing that Bayern had put four past them and ended their hopes of survival, started to light their flares. The smoke clouded the skies, making the match unplayable.

They will take on Hamburger SV, who finished in sixteenth and luckily managed to negotiate the relegation play-off against the third placed side from the 2.Bundesliga, Greuther Fürth. The first leg in Hamburg finished 0-0 and the second leg in Fürth finished 1-1. By virtue of the away goals rule, Hamburg survived in the Bundesliga.

Thus, the other promoted side is the exciting SC Paderborn, who finished second in the 2.Bundesliga in the 2013-14 season, six points behind Köln. This will be their first season in the German top flight. Meanwhile, the 2.Bundesliga has already welcomed FC Nürnberg and Eintracht Braunschweig, following their relegation from the top flight last season.

Here are the changes for the 2014-15 Bundesliga campaign:

- Promoted: 1.FC Köln, SC Paderborn 07
- Relegated: 1.FC Nürnberg, Eintracht Braunschweig

Who will play in the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League?

Bayern, almost customarily, won the Bundesliga in record time. Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 finished second and third respectively. Thus, Bayern and the two Ruhr sides have earned automatic spots in the UEFA Champions League. The fourth spot was earned by Bayer 04 Leverkusen; they will have to enter the group stages of the competition via a play-off against Copenhagen (August 19th and August 27th).

1. Bayern - 90 points

2. Dortmund - 71 points

3. Schalke 04 - 64 points

4. Leverkusen - 61 points

Who will play in the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League?

The Europa League may not generate as much revenue; yet, German teams have taken this competitions seriously more often than not down the years. Also, advancement in this competition helps increase a nation's league's coefficients.

Wolfsburg, Mönchengladbach and Mainz are the teams which claimed the Europa League spots. Wolfsburg qualified automatically, having finished fifth. Gladbach can qualify if they beat SK Sarajevo in the play-off round (August 21st and August 28th). Mainz earned a place in the third qualifying round and looked to be in pole position to qualify, having won the first leg against Asteras Tripoli of Greece, 1-0. Unfortunately, they conspired to lose the second leg, 1-3, thus exiting from the competition.

Who were last season’s domestic cup winners?

The "unofficial start" of the season in Germany is the DFL Supercup. Borussia Dortmund claimed the honors, beating Bayern 2-4 in a highly entertaining contest. Bayern however earned revenge in the DFB Pokal finale, winning out 2-0 in extra time. Bayern also claimed the league title in record time, finishing 19 points ahead of closest rivals, Dortmund. The gap might have been wider had Bayern not lost concentration after already mathematically claiming the title in March.

DFL Supercup winners: Borussia Dortmund - Dortmund, Germany

DFB Pokal winnersFC Bayern München - Munich, Germany

Bundesliga winners: FC Bayern München - Munich, Germany

What are the biggest managerial changes?

There are only four managerial changes in the Bundesliga.

Armin Veh's contract with Eintracht Frankfurt came to an end; he showed very little interest in renewing it and will thus take over at former club, VfB Stuttgart. He knows Stuttgart well, having led them to the Bundesliga title in the 2006-07 season. Stuttgart needed a new coach as Huub Stevens decided against renewing his contract.

Frankfurt's new manager is surprisingly Thomas Schaaf. Schaaf spent his entire playing and coaching career at Werder Bremen. He mysteriously stepped down on Matchday 33 of the 2011-12 season and disappeared. Whether he has changed his purely attacking ways as far as tactics are concerned remains to be seen.

Roger Schmidt takes over at Leverkusen after a season of managerial turmoil. Sami Hyppia coached alongside Sascha Lewandowski in the 2011-12 season but was given sole responsibility of the team during last season. Leverkusen had a bad spell midway through the season but he could not revive them. Eventually, he was sacked and Lewandowski handed the interim role. Lewandowski has returned to his original role in the amateur team.

Finally, Thomas Tuchel departed Mainz after five seasons in charge and an additional season in charge of the amateurs. Kasper Hjulmand is his replacement.
