Recopa Sudamericana - How to watch Defensa y Justicia vs Palmeiras
Live Soccer TV
Palmeiras will aim to become the most successful team in South America when they face a competitive Argentine side in this two-legged tie.

About Recopa Sudamericana

The Recopa Sudamericana, or Recopa Sudamericana Santander for sponsorship reasons, is an annual competition organized by CONMEBOL, football’s governing body in South America. The first edition of this tournament took place in 1989, and after a four-year hiatus between 1999 and 2002, it has taken place without any interruptions. It is considered as the third most relevant club competition in the region behind the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana.

The winners of the Libertadores and the Sudamericana lock horns to determine the champion in a two-legged affair. After the aforementioned hiatus, the format of this competition has remained the same, with the host of the definitive game being decided in a draw by CONMEBOL execs. There have been 27 Recopa Sudamericana games, where those who have entered as Copa Libertadores champions have a massive edge over their Sudamericana counterparts, winning 19 of the 27 editions.

Brazilian clubs have dominated the competition, with ten titles going to that South American country. Argentine teams follow them closely, with their clubs being able to win nine titles. When it comes to clubs, the most winning side in this competition’s history is Boca Juniors, with four titles. Los Xeneizes have not been able to win this tournament since 2008, when they defeated Arsenal de Sarandí in the final.

The 2019 Recopa Sudamericana took place in Brazil and Argentina. Despite a 1-0 loss in the first leg, River Plate bounced back with a 3-0 win to claim the title against Athletico Paranaense. This was the third win for River Plate in this competition.

The 2020 edition of this tournament will take place in Ecuador and Brazil. Independiente del Valle, winners of the Copa Sudamericana, will try to become the second team from that country to win this title. In order to do that, they will have to beat Flamengo, winners of the 2019 Copa Libertadores.

Did you know? Boca Juniors and River Plate share the record for most Recopa Sudamericana games played until today. The main difference is that Boca has won four, while River has only emerged victorious three times.
