About Campeonato Paranaense 1

The Campeonato Paranaense 1 is the top-flight league for the state of Parana, Brazil. The competition, which is exclusive to clubs from this region, began in 1915, with the inaugural title being won by Internacional de Curitiba, a team that was founded in 1912 and dissolved by 1924.

The format for this competition has changed over the years. In 2019, for example, the 12 participants were placed into two groups of six for two separate tournaments: the Taça Barcímio Sucipira Júnior and Taça Dirceu Krüger. In the first tournament, each team faced the six clubs in the other group, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the semi-finals. Both the last four and the final were contested over one leg. In the second tournament, the Taça Dirceu Krüger, each team faced the five other clubs in their respective group, with the top two from each group moving on to the semi-finals. Both the last four and the final were held over one leg as well. The winners of the two tournaments, who were Toledo and Athletico Paranaense respectively that year, then faced off in a two-legged grand final to determine the champions.

By 2020, everything had changed. All 12 participants were placed in one group in a single round-robin, meaning each club would face the other 11 once. The top eight teams advanced to the final stage – the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final – which were two-legged affairs, while the bottom two got relegated to Campeonato Paranaense - Segunda Divisão. In the final stage, the team with the superior points tally hosted the second leg.
