Kevin de Bruyne has been one of the – if not the – most influential players in Man City’s record-breaking title push. As a result, it shocks no one that the club is eager to extend his contract.
The Belgian’s current deal, which he signed two years ago, does not expire until 2021. Regardless, reports have already emerged claiming that the 26-year-old is close to putting pen to paper on a new six-year deal.
According to The Sun, the player has already agreed to the new terms. An announcement is expected in the New Year, with De Bruyne tipped to join Sergio Aguero and David Silva as the highest earners at the Etihad.
The former Chelsea reject stands to earn $267,319 per week under this new deal, an improvement on the $153,757-per-week he earns under his current contract. The player will also be entitled to bonuses in an extension that will cost the Citizens roughly $83m in total.
This deal will reportedly expire in January 2024 instead of the summer. Fortunately for Guardiola’s side, there was no mention of a release clause, meaning interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona can easily be fended off.
Fernandinho is also expected to extend his stay at Man City despite his deal expiring next summer. Both the Brazilian and the Belgian could be in action on Tuesday, as the table-topper travels to Leicester in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.
