The English Premier League is the world’s most expensive league, and for a good reason, due to the excitement and competition for the title. It is not shocking that the three most expensive football transfers were either moves to or away from the English top-flight.
The Times took a look at the top-earners of each club in the world’s most expensive league, and it showed a few interesting facts about the Premier League. Number one is that the favoritism towards attackers in the beautiful game is real; look no further than England for proof.
More than half of the English clubs’ top-earners are strikers. This has paid off for several clubs, with Jermain Defoe, Alvaro Negredo, Romelu Lukaku, and Harry Kane showing why their clubs offer them a superior wage package. However, some names on the list – namely Wayne Rooney – raises questions as to why forwards are favored.
Another thing to learn from The Times list is that the gap between the league’s rich clubs and the rest is enormous. Rooney (again) is another perfect example. Man United are able to pay the English bench-warmer £300,000.
To put this into perspective, that is four times more than what this season’s top-scorer, Romelu Lukaku, earns. Check out the list below.
