Barcelona may tend to turn to La Masia, their well-renowned youth academy, when in search for up and coming stars, but this isn’t holding the Blaugrana back from going after one of Europe’s most sought after starlets.
This is according to Mundo Deportivo, who claim that the reigning Champions League holders have thrown their hat into the race for Schalke’s 20-year-old midfielder Leroy Sane.
The Catalan giants’ technical secretary Robert Fernandez, alongside his right-hand man Urbano Ortega, were watching the German ace in action on Friday in the 2-1 defeat to Mainz in the Bundesliga.
Sane – whom Mundo Deportivo claim has similar potential to Andres Iniesta and Arda Turan – crossed paths with Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League prior to securing a spot in the Die Knappen first-team.
The German youngster has a €37m buyout clause and is under contract at the Veltins-Arena until 2019.
As per Sky Sports, Schalke chairman Clements Tonnis revealed back in January that the player is going nowhere and desires to continue playing for his current employers, saying:
“It was decided Leroy should stay and the player also wants to stay at Schalke. So this [a Veltins-Arena exit] is not an issue."
