Coach Oscar Tabárez gave his permission to the player to leave the team's training ground in Chile to join his father in Uruguay, where he is under police custody.

Edinson Cavani's Copa América performance may be cut short due to a delicate family. According to sources, the player's father, Luis, was involved in a traffic accident this Monday, which resulted in the death of a 19-year old motorist. The police officers in charge of the investigation revealed that the striker's father was driving under the influence, hitting the victim that travelled in a motorcycle and causing injuries resulting in the death of the youngster.

Cavani found out about the accident moments after it happened, being informed by his brother. "Edi" did not have breakfast with his team-mates, as he was sorting out what needed to be done to help his father. After a meeting with the Uruguayan Football Association's president and team coach Oscar Tabarez, the manager revealed it will be up to the player to leave the team or play the quarter-final match against Chile.

One of the judges in charge of the matter, Guillermo Royes, shared a few more details about the accident.

"We haven't started to sort things out. It has been confirmed that Mr Cavani was involved in a crash, resulting in the death of the driver of the other vehicle. According to police reports, the level of alcohol in his blood stream was high. He will remain under police custody until we decide what can be done to determine his guilt or his innocence," Royes revealed.
